Celebrating Women in Business - Kathy Denney

September 13, 2019 | Leah Driver

There are some phenomenal women who work at Citizens State Bank – they excel in their careers, raise families, volunteer in their communities, and live our mission of helping our clients, co-workers, and communities succeed. In recognition of #NationalBusinessWomensDay, we’ll be highlighting a few, starting with Kathy Denney, AVP-Chief Compliance Officer.

Kathy joined the Bank in 1998 as a teller. She was promoted to several positions over the years, including working as a Trainer and Banking Center Manager. During that time she was also raising her family and attending classes at Ball State University.

While banks have always worked with outside auditors and attorneys, internal compliance departments became common in the mid-2000s. Based on her knowledge and skillset, Kathy was chosen to develop our compliance policies and procedures. Anyone familiar with banking, or who watches the news, can imagine how important this role is to the success of any institution, but especially to a community bank.

If we stopped here, Kathy would be an inspiration to other women, but this wasn’t enough for her. She’s a talented artist who enjoys working in almost all mediums – painting, sculpting, knitting, macramé, jewelry-making, baking – there’s almost nothing she doesn’t do. While she’s always created art in her free time, a few years ago she opened her own business, Woman in the Moon Art Studio, where she sells her art and teaches classes in a variety of mediums.

When you talk to Kathy, you never know what to expect. She’s as comfortable discussing government policies concerning anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing as she is telling you about her latest commissioned portrait, weekend art festival, or family shenanigans. Like so many others, she’s paved a professional road she could never have imagined when she started her career, and making that path a little smoother for the women who follow in her footsteps.

Who are the women who inspire you? Send me an email, and that person might be featured in a blog article of their own.
